When you start planning a trip, what do you normally do? Gather a group of friends? Get your significant other on board?

While these are wonderful options when traveling, if you never even CONSIDER the possibility of going by yourself, you could be missing out on some pivotal self-growth and adventure.

I took my first solo trip abroad in 2016 to Southeast Asia. It was clearly one of the most eye-opening adventures of my life because I was challenged in new and exciting ways that not only pushed me out of my comfort zone but introduced me to new facets of myself.

I understand that this idea of going on a trip, especially abroad, by yourself can seem frightening and a little bit intimidating. How can you trust that you’ll be safe? Can you enjoy that much time by yourself? Will you be able to get to new destinations?

If you’re feeling nervous about taking a solo trip, start small! Go to a new city close by, or travel to a new state you’ve always wanted to see. Stop waiting for a reason to visit and just become the reason.

Check out this video to find out my top 5 reasons for planning a solo trip.

1. Destroy your comfort zone

If you’re a business owner, you have to learn time after time how to get out of your comfort zone so that you can take new leaps, promote your services and continue to grow your business. Even if you’re not a business owner, this same lesson is applicable across the board. It’s crucial you learn how to break down the limiting, suffocating boundaries of your comfort zone. When you travel alone, you become less fearful of exiting your comfort zone, and, dare I say, a little bit enthralled with it.

2. Feel confident and empowered

Traveling alone will force you to use parts of yourself that you may not have used in awhile. If you’ve taken the back seat in decision making for awhile, you will have to engage those muscles once more. You will also learn that you are very capable of taking charge when you need to. In some countries, you have to be much more assertive to get your point across, or in some instances, you may end up proving to yourself that you can get to where you need to be when you need to be there. It’s in these beautiful moments that you feel the most empowered and confident, which will surely be taken home with you.

3. Have freedom to meet new people

When you’re traveling alone, you’re never really alone. It’s when I take a solo trip that I end up having the most conversations…it’s just that I’m having them with total strangers. What I love the most about traveling abroad is the new culture I get to experience and enjoy, and being able to travel alone means you get to see whatever you want, whenever you want, and talk to whomever you want. Don’t be afraid to meet new people, enjoy a cup of joe with a stranger or listen to the life story of a new girlfriend. You could very well have one of the best experiences of your life if you just go with the flow, get out of your own head and enjoy the company of somebody new.

4. Become more in tune with your intuition

Traveling solo is the best way to get back in touch with your intuition. I believe one of the main reasons I slept so intensely for several weeks after my trip around Asia was because I could finally turn off my intuition “engagement.” I had to check in with myself constantly to know whether or not a situation was safe, if I wanted to stay in or go out, if I felt like eating here or there, if I wanted to walk left or right, and so on. If you ask yourself often, “What do I even like?” or “Who am I?” I believe taking a trip alone will kickstart your path to finding that out.

5. Fall in love with your own company

Last but not least, when you travel alone you see life in a new light and share experiences with just yourself. While I love sharing experiences with another, there’s something very beautiful about being the only one that gets to have a moment. It’s a gift to yourself. There’s tons of beauty in every second we’re alive on this lovely planet and when you travel by yourself your awareness of those moments are heightened. After my trip around Asia, I came back a different person. I attribute a lot of my self-growth to the moments I was truly with myself, staying present, and savoring each moment.
